WWW-intensive concept mapping for metacognition in solving ill-structured problems

چکیده
Concept mapping is one of the most intimate and most dynamic learning support activities that needs still a drastic further evolution of methods and tools. WWW-based concept mapping gains momentum quite fast now and needs a solid reviewing of the various approaches and the empirical effects. This article bridges the technological advance of WWW-based concept mapping tools and its more recent effects on learning by problem solving. The results show that it added value manifests in the phases of idea generation and selection. The mapping approach caused a broader perception and a greater diversity of ideas. The conclusion is that further investments are needed to make WWW-based mapping more accessible and integrated in WWW-based learning management systems.

Effects of Short Term Training in Concept-mapping on the Development of Metacognition
Considering the fact that academic curricula asks of students to perform better in an ever increasing information world and to be able to solve problems efficiently, this study was aimed at verifying if students will develop metacognition, the ability to reflect on one’s own cognitive processes to a significant degree, after receiving a short term training in concept-mapping, an information org...
متن کاملUsing Digital Mapping Tool in Ill-structured Problem Solving
Scaffolding students’ problem solving and helping them to improve problem solving skills are critical in instructional design courses. This study investigated the effects of students’ uses of a digital mapping tool on their problem solving performance in a design case study. It was found that the students who used the digital mapping tool performed better than those who did not use the tool in ...
متن کاملDesign of a Dual-Mapping Learning Approach for Problem Solving and Knowledge Construction in Ill-Structured Domains
Problem solving has been increasingly used as an important approach to learning especially in ill-structured domains. It is assumed that knowledge can be better consolidated and extended through problem-solving experience. However, many learners do not have the ability to separate general knowledge from specific cases, which inhibits successful transfer of knowledge to new situations. This stud...
متن کاملUniversity Students Perspective in Nanotechnology Learning: Assessing the Relationship between Concept Mapping and Metacognition
Nanotechnology has emerged in the engineering education of universities, and increased the students’ difficulties in understanding and learning it. Concept mapping as a metacognitive tool may be appropriate for students to learn nanotechnology because previous research has confirmed that this tool helps students learn disciplines like chemistry, physics, biology and materials science. The curre...
متن کاملInstructional Design Models for Well-Structured and Ill-Structured Problem-Solving Learning Outcomes
Although problem solving is regarded by most educators as among the most important learning outcomes, few instructional design prescriptions are available for designing problem-solving instruction and engaging learners. This paper distinguishes between well-structured problems and ill-structured problems. Well-structured problems are constrained problems with convergent solutions that engage th...
